Angkor Wat International Half Marathon

People who got involved in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon held in Dec 1996 established the Hearts of Gold on October 10, 1998 after two years of preparation, wishing "to share hope and courage through sports."

Ms. Yuko Arimori, the representative director of HG designed the symbol mark and Lorraine Moller, sub leader named this organization Hearts of Gold®. Strong and beautiful heart of people who want to make social contributions is likened to "Gold medal of heart."

Since the establishment of Hearts of Gold in 1998, we have supported holding the Angkor Wat Int'l Half Marathon. The entry fee is partly spent for self-supporting to anti-personnel landmine survivors such as making prosthetic limbs, etc. to promote sports for the disabled.

In addition to holding the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon, Hearts of Gold supports, both physically and spiritually, in enhancement of the organization and facility of the Cambodian Disabled Athletics Federation (CDAF) which controls the disabled track and field athletes.

Hearts of Gold (HG) has engaged in supportive activities for Cambodian Disabled Athletics Federation (CDAF) as a project of promotion of sports for the disabled since 1998 when HG established. The main project is Angkor Wat International Half Marathon.

There are many disabled people in Cambodia. HG supports CDAF aiming to realize a society where disabled people do their exercises regularly, take care of their health and live positively.

Recently HG has launched joint project with other groups and expanded the range of activities. HG has also started to help CDAF get organized.

Background

Hearts of Gold (HG) has engaged in supportive activities to hold Angkor Wat International Half Marathon (AWHM) at Angkor Wat, World Heritage Site since 1996. In Cambodia there are many landmine survivors. HG has helped them to enjoy sports using wheelchairs and artificial limbs since 1997. Supportive activities for the disabled depend on International Committee of the Red Cross and NGO overseas due to insufficient focus on national welfare policy for the disabled. At the beginning, only a few disabled people participated in the marathon. But 30 people with wheelchairs and 86 people with artificial limbs took part in it last year. HG put importance on the management of Cambodian Disabled Athletics Federation- CDAF. HG financially helped CDAF renovate the office with Okayama Setouchi Lion's Club in 2005. HG has continuously provided financial support for maintaining the office since then.
